王1000$的真实面目——外国同学的看法
Wow. Just wow. While I have physics and a paper to write, I really need to get this out.Grace Wang. She's really something.
She's quite useful to the media. Both sides are having a field day.The chinese TV are branding her as this terrible traitor while westernmedia is holding her up as the lone voice of reason. They both areneglecting the truth, what Grace really is, beyond the 9 minute Youtubevideo and glorious interviews.
When I first met her at a dinner, she immediately spilled her lifestory. I thought, maybe she was being a slightly socially incompetentfob and trying to make friends. I listened. What a good story it was.
She told of how she was involved in a political group with some toplawyers in China. They were trying to get the truth out of theTiananmen square incident. They wrote articles and blogs together onthe subject. Then one day, one of her friends involved in the groupdisappeared. They called her, went to her house, tried everything, butshe was no where to be found. Then Grace and her parents start freakingout. Grace's dad, at the time the ex mayor of Qingdao, afraid of Gracefacing a similar fate, went to her files in the city government andthrew them out. She got a new name, and quickly moved to South Korea.At the time, Grace told us that she already dropped out of her highschool in Qingdao because she was unsatisfied by the best high schoolin Shandong province. She moved to Korea, and there she learned Englishby watching American films. While she was there, she also slept aroundwith a lot of guys. Then she applied to Harvard and got rejected. Thenext year, she applies again, to Harvard, Princeton, Yale, and Duke.She gets accepted to all but Harvard. She chose to come to Duke becauseshe got the Robertson. She then turns down the Robertson because shedidn't want the restrictions set by the program.
After the story finished, we were all pretty amazed. We were allthinking that this seemingly innocent Chinese student is destined forgreatness. After we come back to my room, she proceeds to tell one ofus about the guy in the dorm she had sex with. I was quite shocked bythis. She seemed so innocent, and we had only been at Duke for lessthan 5 days. She says the guy was a virgin and now he wants arelationship. We go to the common room, she points him out, and he wasplaying pool at the other side of the room, totally not payingattention to her.
Later on, Grace begins telling us many stories about herself. All she ever talks about is herself.
As the stories piled on, they became inconsistent, and sometimesdirectly contradicting. People begin question her trustworthiness.Eventually, after months of lies and irrationality, people begindisliking her. For such a trusting and kind dorm like Brown to dislikesomeone, you really have to be special. And Grace is that special. Nowwe know she is a liar. She didn't go to Korea or even participate inanything political. She even told people that she wrote her ownrecommendations for college applications. She made up stories to makeherself seem impressive for colleges, and now, the western media.
She's overloading by taking around 6 courses. 2-3 of those areforeign language courses. She was angry that the academic dean wouldn'tlet her do more. Funny thing is, she's definitely not doing well in anyof them. I've heard her practice her German, and it is atrocious.
She also reads like a maniac. I don't really know what she reads, butit's Chinese literature/philosophy and political theory. She printshundreds of pages a night to read, parades around with her stack ofpapers, telling anyone who would listen, trying to impress anotherperson of her political acumen.
She shaved off her eyebrows the other day. Because 1: all her boyproblems will go away, and 2: pretty girls never make history.
She also makes up stories about how people ask to have sex with her or perform sexual acts with her.
Is it me, or is she someone trying to convince herself that she's destined for greatness?
It would really take a really long time to really describe all myGrace stories and I don't have time for it. But all I can say is, shehas been lifted up by western media as a martyr in this battle forTibet. And she's drinking in every moment of it, because finally, sheis being seen as a hero.
What a silly, irrational girl.
Oh how could I forget to mention, she wants to be president of China. Wow，我也只能用Wow来形容……虽然我还有篇物理论文必须写出来，但在那之前我必须把这篇东西写出来。
王1000$啊（原文为Grace Wang），她也真是太那个啥了。
她可真是媒体炒作的最佳对象，而且两边儿炒得都很热闹。中国的电视台把她报道成一个恐怖的叛徒，而西方的媒体则把她拔高，说她敢于发出质疑的声音。可它们恰恰都忽视了，在那段9分钟youtube视频以及光鲜亮丽的采访背后，这个叫王千源的女孩的真面目。
我和王千源的初会是在用餐的时候，她上来就跟我大讲特将她的人生故事。一开始，我觉得她只不过是想通过一些不太合适的经历点缀，来让自己显得更善于交际——想要交朋友罢了。于是我就听，接下来的故事可就太精彩了！
她开始讲，她当初是如何被吸纳进中国一个由顶级律师组成政治组织。这些精英们致力于找出TAM affair的真相，并且为此写了大量的文章和博客。后来，她的一个朋友失踪了。其他人于是就联络她，并且找到她家，但此时她已经不在那里了。之后，王千源和他的家人就打算逃亡。她的父亲——据王千源自己说，他当时是青岛市的市长（exmayor），因为害怕女儿面对风险，就从政府办公室把她的档案调了出来。从那以后，王千源有了一个新名字，并且迅速逃到了韩国。同时，她也从她在青岛的高中退了学，据她说，那是因为那所在山东省最好的学校对她的行为很不满意，她才退学的。跑到韩国之后，王千源通过看英语电影自修了英文——同时，也和身边的一些异性发生了关系（汗，太难以置信了，译者注）。学成后她申请去哈佛大学念书，申请被拒绝。过了一年，她又继续申请，这次除了哈佛大学，还有耶鲁、普林斯顿和杜克。这些申请除哈佛的依旧被驳回以外，其余的都通过了。王千源选择了杜克，因为她拿到了杜克的 Robertson奖学金（奖学金处翻译存疑）。但后来还是放弃了这个奖学金，因为王千源说她不喜欢这个奖学金设下的种种限制。
等她讲完了这个故事，我们这群听众都惊了。我们当时都觉得眼前这个看似纯真无邪的女孩，注定会成为一个伟大的人物！等我们回到宿舍后，王千源就继续跟我们讲，她自己已经和一个男生睡过了。我们都震惊了，要知道她的外表长得太纯真，更何况我们搬到杜克才不过五天而已！王千源说那个男生还是个处男，做过之后他表示想和她正式确立关系。于是我们跑到公共区域，王千源指了指她说的那个男生。当时那个男生正在房间的另一头打台球，根本就没拿正眼瞧王千源。（说真的，我无语了，译者按）
见识了她的“男朋友”之后，王千源又开始讲起了她自己的许多故事——来来去去她只是在讲她一个人的事情！
等到故事越讲越多，它们的情节就逐步显得不协调起来，而且有的时候是自相矛盾的。渐渐地，周围的朋友开始质疑王千源的诚实。最终，他们都受够了她几个月以来的谎话连篇和胡说八道，变得一点也不喜欢她。在我们这样一个互相信任和友善的宿舍楼里，如果一个人被集体厌恶，那么这个人真得非常非常特别才行—— 王千源的确就是这么“特别”。
现在我们都知道王千源是个大话王了！她根本没去过什么韩国，更没参加过任何politic活动。她甚至曾经告诉我们，连她入学申请的推荐函都是她自己写的。
一开始，她为了引人注目而用这些劳什子谎话来欺骗同学，而现在呢？欺骗对象又轮到了西方媒体！
王千源成天为了她选的那六门课程疲于奔命，其中有两三门是外语。她老为了系主任不让她多选课程而怒气冲冲，可笑的是，在那六门课程里，她连一门都学不好！我曾经听她练习德语，那发音可真是糟糕。
她同样经常发狂地阅读。我其实不知道她在读什么，好象是中国文学、哲学和政治类的东西。她一个晚上就打印了数百页的文章，将书桌上堆满打印的文章。同时也给任何愿意听她宏论的人布道，试图让人感受到她对政治的敏锐。
有天她居然把自己的眉毛给剔了个干净，原因是：
1 不会再有男孩子缠着她；
2 漂亮女孩从来就不可能创造历史。
尽管如此，王千源还是编了很多故事，说有很多男人想和她上床，或者已经和她上了床！（译者再次无语）
现在还有谁认为这个王千源注定会成为一个伟大人物么？
要讲完我们这个王千源的故事那真得滔滔不绝不绝如缕……而且时间还不够用！我可真没闲工夫浪费在这里！
不过我可以肯定的是，王千源现在的确已经被西方媒体捧成了ZDaffair的一个殉道者——而且她很享受这件事带来的一切！因为最终，她会成为一个“英雄”。
她真是一个既变态又疯狂的女孩！
哦对了，我差点都把这个忘了。

also, i'm working on something for the western press about chinese
response to wang qianyuan, i'm very interested to see how this all
develops. the reactions from wangmin we can all read, but definitely
want to survey views of some over-educated young people like
yourselves. : )

what i have heard about her: yesterday i spoke to an american friend
who interviewed her last year as she was applying to american
colleges...and was extremely impressed by her. i read something else
about her, supposedly written by a roommate at duke, indicating she is
one of those people who invents wild stories in order to get people's
attention. i see no reason to doubt this description...but at same
time i see no reason to doubt the information in her article, which
can be independently verified. so while taking on the role of mediator
may well have been in part a way to show off, she clearly takes pride
in her self-conception as a conciliator, and as someone who thinks for
herself....
so...what is your opinion about her? to what extent are the attitudes
and behavior that she's displaying negative for china? is this
behavior due to personal failings, or to those of her parents, or of
society at large? or to what extent is her focus on reconciliation
between parties and independent thinking constructive?
what is the range of differing views about her, if any, on your
campuses or at your companies, or among friends? when people talk
about her in public, is it just to condemn her, or is anyone willing
to say anything positive about her in front of other people?
she writes that she's "been told that after convening an assembly to
condemn me, my high school revoked my diploma and has reinforced
patriotic education." would your high schools have done that if she
had graduated as your classmate? should schools be doing this? how
much patriotic education is ideal?
and have you read any good articles analyzing these kinds of questions?
